The "Pharmer's" Mind in UNMC -- 7 --

One thing about being in a pharmacy course, especially in the University of Nottingham, is that time flies. 24 hours never seemed enough, well, if you want to get some proper rest and a life beyond studies. I am now in my third year of studies so I am now in the UK. Time flies even faster here. Sun sets at 4 pm. Every day after class, the skies are already dark. But, to those who are coming over next year, you’ll get used to it soon enough. The hard part when transitioning over is not finding accommodation, but finding the correct one and large enough to fit enough people. Also, when you are over here, you’d tend to save money cause of the conversion rate. However, I’d say don’t save so much especially during the first few weeks. Get quality items (which will cost more sometimes). If not, you’ll regret it as some cheap items here in UK really are cheap – they breakdown faster than you can imagine.
Thinking back to year 1 and 2, it was somehow a miracle, I think, that I can get through all those coursework, lab reports and exams. If someone were to ask me how did I study and manage PharmNotts at the same time, I seriously don’t know how to answer. But, I guess the key is to take things one step at a time. Every day, there will always be a challenge to be faced. I had the chance to meet people from my class that were and are totally awesome. It is crucial, I think, that people from the same class especially for us who twin to the UK as they will be your support and help in the UK. We depend on each other to get the best out of our time here in the UK. You will seriously (well, I did) treasure your friends more. One thing I really missed is the lecturers in UNMC. Lecturers in UNMC are like so helpful and they become like friends. The class size of UK is like literally mind blowing when I first attended the lecture. It is possible to jam outside the lecture theatre but as all things, after a while, it becomes a normal thing. Due to the size, there won’t be much chance of interacting with the lecturers – well, unless if you have questions to ask at the end.
I would like to end this testimonial with a piece of advice to the juniors (now I feel so old), professional skills lectures are seriously important. You’ll be at a great advantage when you are in year 3.
Hope everyone have fun in Malaysia with all the amazing events coming up like Viva La Vida. And to those in the UK, we can do this!
P.S. To my two lovely buddies, you know who you are, I’ll see you soon in the UK! :)

Signing off,
Bruce Wong

The "Pharmer's" Mind in UNMC -- 6 --

Never did I realize how fast time could pass. Until now, when I am no longer a fresher, but a senior.  Recalling back our first year, I could still picture the moment when we first arrive to Nottingham University; struggling to blend into a whole new environment where everything seem so new and unfamiliar to us, suffering from home sick and crying to go home badly. But what I cannot forget the most, are the moments I spent together in uni. From the start where everyone was considered as nobody but simply just strangers, up until now where we couldn’t help but to stick with them everywhere we go.  Looking from another way, I felt thankful to such harsh environment where we could no longer depend on our family, because of this, friends are the one for us to depend on. Remember the moment when we cooked together with our friends simply because we missed home dishes so much? What about the joy and laughter we had while spending our time with friends in sport complex? And not to forget, the hard time we went through together during the mentally agonizing study week and also exam period. Yes, there are too many moments to be treasured, cherished and remembered.  Even moments which were once considered bitter turn out to be so sweet once recalled.=))
University of Nottingham may have provided us with established teaching stuffs and facilities, but what goes beyond the control of the lecturers, is the pleasure studying environment created by us… yes, each and every one of us. I have heard from number of seniors that our batch has been a very hardworking batch; many books in the library were even being borrowed away during the first week of the academic year.  Yes, we fight and strive for the best we could; pushing ourselves really hard until we touched our limit, however, what  I myself appreciate the most is not the  “striving spirit “of ours, but the precious value of not being selfish of sharing our knowledge with one another. I am glad to have peers who are there to give me a hand whenever I encountered doubts in my studies, and to be more specific, they are never stingy of doing so.  They could have kept to themselves; but they have chosen the wise one- which is to help those who are struggling with their studies. Making sure that they could advance into the next academic year is not their only responsibility, but to also escort their peers at the same time. Such positive learning environment cannot be designed by any of our lecturers no matter how much effort they dumped, but fortunately, it is being created by us. I know that with us, the joy of learning could be preserved for the following 3 years. At the time being, I do hope that such value can be passed on to our juniors.
I remember the time when I first enrolled into the uni, I did not attend the orientation or the induction, meaning that I have missed out the chance to know my seniors. While I thought that getting aid in studies from senior is an impossible mission for me, I was given a buddy =)). I clearly know that being into the second year is nothing easy and seniors have their studies to bother with. Not wanting to disturb them, I still came to times when I could do nothing but to seek for help. Apology is what I could say for disturbance caused, but in return, he offered me with plenty of patience and detailed information on my question asked, no matter how stupid my question turn out to be. I really thank him for his care, especially the time when I received a message in concern with my exam performance right after I finished my first ever exam in uni. Indeed, a genuine buddy I have. =)) Now that he has left for UK along with other seniors, I sincerely wish that they could all achieve their dream in becoming a professional pharmacist. Not to forget, to enjoy every moment spent at the same time. University’s life has been thought as one of the most memorable part of one’s life, so let’s cherish and spend wisely for our once in a life time experience…. GOODLUCK TO ALL!!!

Highlights of Orientation Day

Day 1

The registration started at 9 in the morning in the blue building. Same as last year, the newcomers got their own stickers on shirt with their names on it. The committees brought them to F3C09, which is the place the activities held.

An introduction was given by the two emcees, Sui Lun and Soon Yew, followed by Ethan Tiong, the current president of PharmNotts society.

Next, the activities started with Human Bingo. Each person brings along the form, walk around and meet new friends. Then, the commitee invite some people form the list to perform in front us. Dancing to Oppa Gangnam Style, Shuffling, Can do Split, Name out 10 Korean drama's title, pumping in 2 minutes and etc.

Familiar? Brandon (wearing PharmNotts shirt) was the shuffler during the Orientation last year.

Watch the Oppa Gangnam Style danced by the members here! x)

Picture Hunt was next. The newcomers formed groups and started to hunt pictures from the list.

The losers dance to Chicken Dance. x)

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Day 2

Everyone woke up early, had their breakfast, and gathered in F3C09 lecture room. It was started with SCREAM game, where in group, everyone had their eyes closed, and when counted to 3, each person must look at a person's eye. If two of them look each other, they have to scream. Whoever scream first, whoever wins.

And next, the game of making lines with their belongings.

Dance was the next activity. Each group learnt a dance with different korean songs and performed in front everyone. x)

After lunch, they had station games. Ultimate Code, Continue the Lyrics, Water Relay, Guess the word, Transter rice with face and etc.

And so yeap, before annoucing the winning team, all of them were told that there were some seniors hiding in their group, acting as junior, and so they have to pick them out. Isaac Tan was the first senior who picked out by the junior, and HuiWen was the last "SPY" picked by them. Of course, there were some other juniors got picked, they really do look like one of us. hahaha...

THE SPIES!

The winner team representatives.....

So that's all for the highlights of Orientation 2012. Thanks to all the newcomers who joined us. I understand that most of you were exhausted running back and forth. Anyhow, we still hope that you enjoyed very much, think of the time when you get to meet new friends and able to share your stories. Are you getting close to them now? XD

Thanks to all the commitees as well, we appreciate all your hard work, especially our lovely Even Manager, See Shao Qin, who started to plan this event before the summer holidays.

So this event was a SUCCESS!
