11th Asia Pacific Pharmaceutical Symposium in Taiwan- Chapter 6

Day 6

All of the participants left to the Taipei Medical University. A talk about "Medication Safety Beyond Hospital: Role Of Pharmacists" was given by Professor Azmi from Malaysia, "How to build a safer drug usage environment for the public" by Angela On, "Asia Pacific Pharmacy Education" by Professor Chan Siu Yang, and "Reforming pharmacy education to meet the social need" by Yea-Huei KaoYang.

So the talks were basicly about the drug safety and the role on the pharmacist on the drug safety.

1st check: label of container before taking
2nd check: label of container against the prescription during actual dispensing
3rd check: label of container before putting it away.

and Remember 5 Rights:

5R
  • Right Drug
  • Right Patient
  • Right Dose
  • Right Route
  • Right Time

So, we have to make that we always check and check and check and check and check and check and check.... before dispensing.... x)

Owh and one thing to remember, the difference between SIDE EFFECT and ADVERSE DRUG REACTION. It was told that some of them like to ask this during interview. x)
From what I learnt there, if I'm not mistaken, side effects are the possible symptoms which we already know after taking drug, whereas adverse drug reaction are the unknown reaction which could be life-threatening.

The Patient Counseling Event came up next. It was the final competition for this PCE. Here are some videos I took which could be helpful for the students. Listen to the comments or advices from each judges as you might do the same mistakes as well. All the participants below did a great job overall.

Our dear seniors Vivian Tan and Vinesh were acting as patients.

Beginner level: 1st participant
This video continues the videos above.

2nd participant

3rd participant

Advanced level: 1st participant

2nd participant

There was another participant for the advanced level but unfortunately I don't have the video with me. I will upload once I found the video from others.

So after the PCE, it was the Pharmacy contest where each group had 10 minutes (if I'm not mistaken) to present their topic in the auditorium.

After Pharmacy Contest, all of us returned back to our hotel and prepared of the Gala Night, the night when we say Goodbye to everyone! All of the handsome boys and girls wore formally with evening gown / dress / tuxedo. The food there was delicious. (I like the cheese cake.. x) teehee). There were some performances by the magicians, the participants, and from the committee members of APPS Taiwan. The night WAS AWESOME! And here are the videos of photos taken throughout the APPS Taiwan.

I guess some of the committee members did cried while watching this video. (okay I did also.) Thanks to all of their hard work, if not we wouldn't have such a great TRIP in Taiwan.

Me, Vivian, Cindy, Hanna Ong and Dana

MeiSian, Jasmine, Me, Cindy and Stephanie.

I know I am in most of the photos. hehehe.. so sorry as these are the photos I currently have now.

But anyway, overall, the APPS Taiwan was nearly Perfect. Why not 100% perfect? because nothing is perfect! x) If there's another chance of participating APPS in Taiwan, I WOULD WANT TO join again! Next year, the Asia Pacific Pharmaceutical Symposium will be held in Japan.  It would be a great chance for you as you will make more friends from all around the Asia and you may learn a lot which may be helpful in future studies.
Oh and if possible, there is also an IPSF World Congress available for you to join as well if you want to. For this year, it will be held in Egypt, next year would be in NETHERLAND! x)

Dear future UNMC juniors... the event was very very helpful for our future studies. If you are curious about the APPS event (for the previous or coming APPS), like the rules and condition or what they will provide us, feel free to ask your seniors.
(For batch 2012/2013 year 1 students, you may contact Dana, Hanna Ong, Cindy, me, or any of our senior who went as well [Vivian Tan, Jasmine, Chloe, MeiSian, Stephanie, JinHan, Vinesh])

AWESOME EVENT, AWESOME PLACE, AWESOME PEOPLE.
